Buying a website blind

Most people are asked to pay for a website before they’ve seen any of it. You get a quote, maybe a few links to other people’s sites, and a promise that yours will look good. Then the deposit goes in and you wait to find out.

It’s hard to judge a website from a description, and it’s harder to compare two quotes when you can’t picture what either of them gets you. So a lot of owners put it off, and the old site stays up another year.

The mockup flips that around. You see your homepage and the price first. Then you decide.

How this started

Mallacoota Hireboats. I went through their website, wrote up what wasn’t working, and made them a homepage mockup nobody had asked for. Grant looked at it, we had a chat, I gave him a price, and the site is live now. It’s written up in the Hireboats case study.

They saw their homepage before anyone talked money. That’s the idea behind this page, and now the fixed price comes on the same link. The sites I’ve built for other local businesses are on the work page.

How it works

  2. I make your homepage mockup and work out a fixed price for building the site.
  3. Within 48 hours you get a private link with both on it.
  4. If you like it, we have a chat and I build it. If you don’t, that’s the end of it. No obligation.

What it costs

The mockup costs nothing. The site it shows comes with a fixed price on the same link, and that’s what you’d pay.

For a rough idea before then: rebuilding a site that’s structurally fine starts at $3,000, a redesign runs $3,500 to $10,000, and a fresh build from nothing is $4,000 to $15,000. All plus GST. The full breakdown is on the pricing page, with no lock-in contracts.

Questions I get asked

Is the mockup really free?

Yes. No deposit, no card details, nothing to sign. You get a mockup of your homepage and a fixed price on a private link, and there’s no obligation to go ahead.

What do I need to send you?

Your business name, what you do and your town, plus a phone number and email so I can send you the link. If you have a website already, add it. If there’s something you want on the new site, put that in too.

Will it look like my business?

That’s the point of it. It uses your real photos, your phone number and your colours, and nothing on it is made up. No invented reviews, awards or numbers. It carries a “concept by Your Mate Agency” banner so nobody mistakes it for your live site.

Who else can see it?

Nobody. It sits on a private link that I send to you and only you. It isn’t listed anywhere or shown to anyone else.

Why only 10 a month?

Because I’m one person, and each mockup is made for one business and takes real time. Ten a month is what I can do properly alongside the sites I’m building.

What happens if I want to go ahead?

We have a chat about the site and anything you’d change on the mockup, then I build it for the fixed price. When it’s live I stick around for 30 days of free fixes and questions. If you don’t want to go ahead, you don’t owe me anything.
