Here's what's actually happening: businesses are finally hitting the wall with slow internet speeds. The breaking point isn't downloads anymore (streaming Netflix was never the issue for most businesses) — it's uploads.
Every time you:

You're using upload speed. And most basic NBN plans give you pathetic upload speeds — we're talking 1-5 Mbps when you probably need 10-20 Mbps to run a modern business without wanting to throw your computer out the window.

1. Your competitors might already be ahead While you're waiting 10 minutes to upload a batch of photos to Facebook, your competitor down the road might have upgraded and is posting content in seconds. They're responding to customer enquiries faster, updating their booking systems in real-time, and generally just getting more done because their internet isn't holding them back.
2. Cloud software isn't optional anymore COVID pushed everyone online, but now it's permanent. Your accounting is probably cloud-based. Your booking system definitely is. Your inventory management, customer database, even your EFTPOS — it's all connected and constantly talking to the internet. Slow upload speeds mean everything takes longer and fails more often.
3. Customer expectations have changed Your customers expect you to be as connected as they are. They want immediate responses to messages, up-to-date availability on your website, and seamless online experiences. Step 1: Test your current speeds Go to fast.com (Netflix's speed test) and run it during your busiest time. Look at both download AND upload speeds. If your upload is under 10 Mbps and you're running any kind of modern business, you're probably due for an upgrade.

- Basic online presence, cloud accounting: NBN 25 (25/5 Mbps) minimum
- Regular photo/video uploads, video calls, cloud storage: NBN 50 (50/20 Mbps)
- Heavy content creation, multiple staff, constant cloud sync: NBN 100 (100/20 Mbps) or higher
Step 3: Check what's available at your location Not all NBN speeds are available everywhere. Go to NBN Co's website and check what technology you're on. If you're on fixed wireless or satellite, your options are more limited, but they've been upgrading these networks too.
Step 4: Don't just look at speed Cheaper isn't always better. Some providers oversell their networks, so you get the speed you paid for at 2am but not at 2pm when you actually need it. Ask about typical evening speeds and whether they guarantee business-grade service levels.
The other thing to consider is your current provider. If you're happy with their service and support, ask them about upgrading first. Switching providers can be a hassle, and if your current mob has been reliable, that's worth something.
